1. Introduction

This guide walks you through building a high-quality synthetic putting green in your backyard. It is written from real installation experience — the same methods we use at Sims & Greens when we build tour-quality greens across the Tampa Bay area.

A well-built synthetic green should roll true, hold chips and pitches, and require minimal maintenance. The difference between a good green and a great one almost always comes down to the base and the details. This guide focuses on those details.

Who this guide is for: Homeowners who want a real, playable green and are willing to do the work carefully. If you rush the base or cut corners on materials, the finished surface will show it.

2. Planning & Design

This is the most important section of the entire project. A poorly planned green is expensive to fix later. A well-planned one feels natural the first time you step on it.

Start With These Four Questions

  1. Primary use: Pure practice? Family play and games? Both?
  2. Available space: Measure carefully and leave room for fringe and access.
  3. Existing landscape features: Trees, fences, drainage, and setbacks all matter.
  4. Daily use: How the green will actually be used day to day.

Recommended Sizes (Putting Surface Only)

  • Family / Kids 12×15 to 15×25 ft
  • Serious Practice 15×25 to 18×30–35 ft
  • Small Yard 10×15 to 15×20 ft

Shape & Contour Principles

Because a backyard green is much smaller than a regulation course green, even mild slopes create noticeable break. Keep the contours subtle — typically in the 1–3% range. Soft curves and gentle free-form shapes almost always look better than perfect rectangles.

Designing Around Turf Width

Most quality synthetic putting turf comes in 15-foot widths. If you are not experienced with seaming synthetic turf (or even carpet), design the main putting surface so it fits within a single 15 ft width. A 15 × 25 ft green, for example, uses one full width with no seams across the putting surface.

3. Site Selection & Evaluation

Choosing the right spot is just as important as how you build the green. Drainage is the number-one priority in Florida.

  • Sunlight: Full sun is ideal. Constant deep shade is not ideal if you get a lot of rain without airflow.
  • Drainage: Walk the area after heavy rain. Water should move away from the proposed green.
  • Clearance: Stay clear of major tree roots and low-hanging branches.
  • Utilities & Permits: Confirm access and HOA setbacks. Call 811 before you dig.

4. Materials & Tools Checklist

Turf & Surface Materials

  • Nylon: Does not require sand or rolling. Lower maintenance, but will not hold a shot well without a pad. Speed is not adjustable.
  • Polypropylene (Recommended): ½" to 1¼" pile heights. Requires sand-fill. When filled with round quartz sand, it holds approach shots like a real green.
  • Fringe Turf: Slightly taller and coarser than the putting surface.
  • Cups & Sleeves: Regulation size (4¼ inch). Plan for at least 3–5 cup locations.

5. Site Preparation

Proper site prep keeps your green smooth for years. An elevated green is preferred, with contours created in the base rock.

  1. Clear the Area: Remove grass, roots, and debris from the footprint plus fringe.
  2. Compact Native Soil: Compact thoroughly with a plate compactor. Replace spongy spots.
  3. Build Elevated Base: Add 4+ inches of 1-inch minus crushed stone. Compact in 2-inch lifts while wetting.

6. Base Construction (Fine Leveling)

Spread a 1 to 2 inch layer of fine material (crushed screenings or rock dust) over the compacted base. Compact, shape with a Leveling Rake, and pull a Drag Mat over the surface at least 20 times.

Pro Tip: Roll a half-filled basketball across the compacted base. It leaves a path similar to a golf ball in morning dew, allowing you to easily spot unwanted breaks.

7. Turf Installation

  1. Acclimate: Roll turf out in shade for several hours to relax fibers.
  2. Position: Roll out onto the base and work out wrinkles.
  3. Cut to Shape: Mark lines with sidewalk chalk and cut smoothly using a Loop Cutter.

8. Cup Installation & Final Grooming

Apply round quartz sand using a drop spreader in light layers, brooming in between applications. Drop regulation cups into pre-installed stainless steel sleeves, lightly wet the green, and roll with a lawn roller to set your desired Stimp speed.
